Mazovia–Podlachia Countryside Week

Week-long centre-based horse riding holidays through historic borderland villages

A tourist event for adult, experienced riders.

Programme outline

Sunday – Arrival & settling in

Guests arrive individually in the afternoon. If travelling by train, collection from the local railway station is arranged. Guests arriving by air are advised to fly to Warsaw (Chopin or Modlin Airport) - transfer available. On arrival, there is time to unpack, freshen up and get settled into the house. We meet in the evening for a light meal and an introduction to the week ahead. Dinner is served at the house, followed by a quiet evening and rest after the journey.

Monday - stories from past generations

After breakfast, we set off on our first all-day ride, designed to be a leisurely start to the week's rhythm—for both riders and horses. We ride through vast forests where, with a bit of luck, you might spot moose, deer, or even wolf tracks. The route leads to the village of Stara Maliszewa, where we'll see a tall wooden cross, characteristic of Podlasie, and two chapels: an old wooden one, likely from the late 19th century, and a brick one from 1934, containing a statue of Christ the Burning Heart. At noon, we stop for a rest and lunch. After a break, we head along forest roads to the village of Ugoszcz, home to the Church of St. Anthony of Padua. The parish was established during World War I—the first mass was celebrated here in 1919 in a wooden chapel with a thatched roof, and the current brick church was built between 1929 and 1931. Next, we cross the Ugoszcz River and through the vast forests of the Bug River Landscape Park to the village of Nowe Lipki, where traditional houses tell the stories of their former inhabitants. In the evening, we return home for a warm, home-cooked meal and conversations around the campfire. About six hours in the saddle.

Tuesday - Stories told by the Bug River

That day, we set off on a long hike towards the picturesquely meandering Bug River. We reach the river by traversing small Bug villages, vast meadows, and paths leading through oxbow lakes that have changed shape over the years along with the river's course. It's an open and peaceful landscape—full of light, space, and traces of ancient life etched into the landscape. Along the way, we pass natural floodplains and Bug meadows, habitats for numerous bird species. A silence accompanies us, broken only by the sounds of the wind, bird calls, and the rhythmic clatter of horses' hooves. At noon, we reach the Bug River, where we stop for a longer rest. There's time for a meal for the participants and for the horses, and a moment of relax by the river. After a break, we continue our journey and pass the railway bridge over the Bug—a distinctive feature of the local landscape, which once stood in a different location and has witnessed the changes taking place in the region over the years. In the afternoon, we pass through Prostyń, passing the Basilica of the Holy Trinity and St. Anne. The history of this place dates back to 1510, when—according to local tradition—St. Anne appeared to a local peasant woman, Małgorzata Błażkowa, requesting the construction of a church on a nearby hill. This event initiated a centuries-old pilgrimage tradition and shaped the identity of this part of the region. We return along a different route, still passing through meadows, fields, and forests, allowing ourselves to maintain a leisurely pace and fully immerse ourselves in the landscape of the old route. In the evening, we will enjoy a warm meal and rest after a day spent in the saddle. About 6 hours of horseback riding.
